03Heritage
The Sebti family of Fès is part of the city’s rich class of influential Fassi families, whose roots are traced back to Arab origin.
While the family originally settled in Ceuta (Sebta) and later established themselves in Fez, their major rise in business and economic prominence came during the period of the Second World War, when they expanded via trade in foodstuffs and fabrics.
Today, the Sebti family is recognized not only for their commercial success but as part of the social fabric of Fès — a city whose great families have helped shape its cultural, economic and urban heritage over decades.
04Accommodations
Five suites and studios, each with a private entrance, a terrace and a view over the garden. Rates are per night and shown for direct booking, which is always our lowest.
05Made in Fez
Glazed terracotta is fired, then chipped to shape face-down with a sharpened hammer called a menqach. The cutter works from memory; there is no drawing to follow.
Ceilings and screens are cut from Middle Atlas cedar, carved while the wood is still green, and left unvarnished — which is why an old Fassi room still smells of the forest.
Lime plaster burnished with a river stone and sealed with olive-oil soap. It takes days, it leaves no seam, and it keeps a room several degrees cooler in August.
Wet plaster goes onto the wall, sets for a few hours, then is carved freehand into lace before it fully cures. One slip and the whole panel comes down.
06The Table
Breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are cooked to order, in the house, from that morning's market — so we ask for a few hours' notice. Vegetarian and dietary menus on request.
